The best restaurants of Finnish national cuisine. Best restaurants in helsinki restaurants in helsinki national cuisine

So where to eat in Helsinki? I am sure that this question is faced by both those who are in Helsinki for the first time, and those who have already repeatedly visited the Finnish capital, but are interested in proven places where you can not only eat deliciously, but also just have a pleasant time at a meal.

In this article I will share with you the places that we liked.

On the previous Finnish trip, we spent a whole week in Helsinki, living in apartments, but I think you will agree that you don't always want to go grocery shopping and cook food on your own, especially in another country. It is interesting to get to know its culture, as well as to get to know the city, including through the cuisine, visiting various interesting cafes, trying new or proven dishes, but in a different version.

First, I'll tell you about restaurants and cafes in Helsinki, and at the end of the article, see our TOP-Finnish dishes that you should definitely try, regardless of the cafe or restaurant, this is a kind of culinary “visiting card” of Finland 🙂 Well, let's go!

Well, if you are just planning your trip to Helsinki, then read our Finnish articles to find out how to diversify your leisure time in the capital, and also see a selection of Helsinki attractions here:

You can find a hotel here, but it is more budgetary and comfortable to stay in a private apartment, and besides, this is a good way to immerse yourself in Finnish culture even more deeply. You can rent an apartment through airbnb (don't forget to get your bonus here).

Well, now - FOOD!

I know that many people prefer an early, very simple breakfast, like just a cup of coffee or a plate of fruit. After such a breakfast, you will soon be hungry again, especially if you add to this a morning walk around the city, during which it is undoubtedly very easy to whet your appetite. So, even if you are staying at a hotel where there is breakfasts, you can later drop in somewhere interesting locally for brunch (a cross between breakfast and lunch).

Well, if your breakfast is not included, then there are plenty of coffee shops and cafes at your service in Helsinki that specialize in morning visitors 🙂

EKBERG - here it smells not only of pastries, but also of history!

Ekberg is the oldest café-pastry shop not only in the city and, but also in Scandinavia in general, this historical cafe, which has been proven over the years, attracts tourists like a magnet.

The cafe opened in 1852. Breakfast is served from 7:30 am to 10:30 am on weekdays and brunch from 8:30 am to 1:30 pm on weekends. This is a buffet with a pretty good selection, there are blue cheeses, salmon, jamon, a variety of hearty broccoli / vegetable pies, tea / coffee and cakes.

Alas, the cappuccino / latte is not included in the breakfast menu (it can be ordered separately). You can go to the cafe, in principle, at any time, there are always cakes, cakes, muffins, tea / coffee and so on.

We were on a day off, we had to wait for the table to be vacated, but to take a seat by the window is, in general, a great success.

In the neighboring building there is a boutique-confectionery Ekberg, where you can buy various cakes and chocolates to take away, as well as souvenirs - tea / coffee, mulled wine, jams, etc.

Breakfast cost:
On weekdays - 11.5 euros
Weekends - 17.9 euros

Chocolate cafe - FAZER

Oh, yes, I definitely associate Finka with Fazer chocolate, there is a Fazer boutique cafe in Helsinki, which is also the oldest cafe in the city. There are always a lot of people here, but especially in the morning

Breakfast is also served "buffet" - salmon, fresh vegetables, blue cheese, eggs, porridge / muesli, several types of bread. Well, the best part is, of course, the cakes! Berry, chocolate, cheesecakes - one ran out, they immediately bring a new one, for an hour and a half spent in a cafe, we tried 4 varieties, and there were 6 of them in total

As in Ekberg, breakfast cappuccino is not included at Fazer, but during breakfast hours, it can be bought with a 50% discount, for 2 euros. Breakfast cost - 12 euros

Here in the cafe, of course, they sell chocolate and Fazer sweets, and more recently, a new travel series of chocolate with new fillings.

Well, if you prefer coffee with croissants or cookies for breakfast, then you should go to a coffee shop.

Perhaps the most widespread Finnish coffee chain is Robert's coffee. Their cafes are everywhere - in the center and in sleeping areas, at the ferry terminal and at the train station. But there are, of course, many other interesting establishments.

"University" cafe - Think Corner

Not only students gather here, but also ordinary citizens and tourists, also here, periodically, various master classes, lectures and seminars are held, participation is free

If you don't know that this cafe belongs to the University of Helsinki, then hardly anyone will guess about it - after all, it looks like it's just a nice coffee house with excellent coffee 🙂

and sweets

Lunch / lunch

Juuri Concept Cafe

Once for lunch we went to the Juuri cafe, the peculiarity of this cafe is that traditional Finnish dishes are served here, but in a new processing, with a bias towards healthy food, there are vegetarian and raw food dishes on the menu.

For lunch there is a special menu, we took cream mushroom soup, and topaz with beets and rabbit, for the second fish and venison, and for dessert, chocolate with sorbet and a cheese plate. All dishes were fresh and tasty

The unusual wall for the restaurant amused me - apparently this is such an element of decor декора

Iconic Cafe Kappeli

There is a promenade in the city center - this is the Esplanade Park, and there is the famous cafe "Sibelius" Kappeli, here it is, with the image of the composer at the entrance 🙂

Inside there are 2 rooms - a cafe-pastry shop with a simpler interior and a restaurant with chandeliers, armchairs, etc.

You can come here for dinner, but we had a late lunch here, if you want to sit by the window, it is better to book a table in advance

The lunch menu consists of 3 items and a dessert, each item has 2 dishes to choose from. As the first courses, I took onion soup, and Lesha chose liver pate, and most importantly, both ordered risotto with grilled shrimps (oh, apparently missed Asia)

Naughty BRGR

Local Finns claim that Naughty BRGR has the tastiest burgers and is a confirmation that there are always no places there, so if you are a fan of burgers, then be sure to drop by

We decided to check what the local burgers are so good at and one day we dropped by

The burgers are really very different, there are even vegetarian ones, I had a huge mushroom instead of a traditional cutlet 🙂 and arugula

Fast food lunch in Helsinki

If the budget is limited, then you can find simpler places in Helsinki, here I can recommend the following establishments - Picnic, Vapiano, Pihka and various pizzerias and sushi cafes, where, as a rule, there is a special price tag for a business lunch or buffet offers, usually 10-15 euros per person, so these cafes are really cheap to eat in Helsinki.

At Koti Pizza you can eat excellent pizza, but since you are in Finland, I recommend choosing something special, especially since they have a lot of pizzas on the menu, there is a traditional Finnish blue cheese with mold or with dried venison, for example 🙂

Democratic Latva Bar

Also, before dinner, we once went to Latva Bar. There is both beer and wine, including non-alcoholic ones, and as snacks - topaz with fish, cheese or vegetables.

There were a lot of people, those who did not have enough table crowded at the bar 🙂 The place itself is very simple, especially in the interior (graters play the role of candlesticks), but young people like it, mostly Finnish students hang out here.

Let's get down to the fun part - dinners!

Meripaviljonki - floating restaurant

Restaurant Meripaviljonki, we noticed it in the summer, its originality and peculiarity lies in the fact that it is floating, located right on the lake.

The first time we tried to get there during the day, but alas, it turned out to be closed for a private event, so it is better to clarify the working hours by phone, and even better at the same time to book a table

Well, you know, since the restaurant is floating, then of course it is better to sit by the water, overlooking the lake 🙂

Lyosha ordered himself a lamb with cranberry sauce, and I ordered salmon on a grill,

The subdued atmosphere is very romantic, so I definitely recommend this place for dinner!

Savotta - an evening of Finnish cuisine in the heart of the city!

When we entered this restaurant, for some reason, I had an association with Karelia and villages from the Russian hinterland. On the floor - rugs, in the corner - shelves with books and antique clocks, along some walls - wooden benches

On the window there are kitchen utensils, samovars and teapots, and of course, the main feature - the superview from the window - directly to the Cathedral, because the restaurant is located in the historical center - on Senate Square

Finnish cuisine is a mixture of European and Old Russian, and since there is such an entourage in the interior, you can guess that the menu also includes potatoes, fish soup and other goodies that came from Russia, but flavored with Scandinavian "spices".

I liked the appetizer - a plate of meat and fish delicacies, celery cream soup is served in a wooden bowl, as well as fish and meat - also in ecological wood dishes

Desserts not only look delicious, but also delicious - homemade ice cream and blueberry pie with fresh berries

All in all, dinner here is a great end to your city walk!

Ravintola Nokka - aristocratic atmospheric restaurant

Already the entrance itself with a huge screw speaks of some uniqueness of the restaurant

The atmosphere at Ravintola Nokka is simply gorgeous, it feels like it's in the past - muted tones, thick brick walls (impenetrable wifi), entourage paintings, and a wine cellar

Our order is almost traditional, I have fish, and Lyosha has different types of meat, the main menu consists of Scandinavian cuisine, which is what the waiters recommend, but there is also a simple menu, without reference to the Finnish recipe. But when you find yourself in such a place, you want to try something Finnish, and what the chef recommends is also desirable.

And of course, without desserts, nowhere, I have a chocolate fondant with thick hot liquid chocolate inside and a sorbet, Lesha has a pan cat with marshmallows, ice cream and cloudberry jam

An interesting point: you probably know that in Europe almost everyone drinks water from the tap, including hotels do not put bottles, but there are cups in the bathroom, and even in cafes / restaurants they bring ordinary reusable bottles filled with water.

So, here they also bring a similar bottle, just be prepared for the fact that 6.95 euros per person will be added to the bill. And water costs more than a glass of delicious non-alcoholic wine or cappuccino, because drinking water is still additionally purified here. Alas, I did not distinguish it from the usual one by taste .. Oh, yes, this water is not on the menu, so it’s a surprise when receiving the bill 🙂

At the entrance to the restaurant, in the first hall, there is a bar-cafe with a simpler atmosphere, but in the same style

And now I'll tell you about what you should definitely try from Finnish cuisine, perhaps my tips will help some of you make a choice when you scroll through the menu 🙂

Finnish dishes worth trying!

Karelian pies

These traditional open crispy baskets are made with potatoes or rice and eaten with butter and soft-boiled eggs. They are found with rice many times more often, well, but for me, those with potatoes are tastier 🙂 In St. Petersburg, in Finnish supermarkets, they are also sold

Buckwheat pancakes

They are served with salmon, sour cream and onions. The Finns are not at all popular with buckwheat as a side dish or buckwheat porridge for breakfast, in principle, not everyone knows about these dishes .. But buckwheat flour is held in high esteem, it is added to bread and pancakes are baked.

Buckwheat pancakes (in Finnish, by the way, they are also pronounced blini) look more like pancakes in appearance, for splendor they are made with brewer's yeast. In winter, especially a couple of weeks after Christmas, this is a very popular snack.

Soups

Salmon soups are popular in Finland; it can be either cream soup or regular. I love cream soups, in the photo cream mushroom soup, but not with salmon, but with pieces of dried venison

Bread!

There is a great variety of it here !! Even in flour Italy, we have not seen so many bread products - from flat cakes, edges and pressed coarse grains with seeds / sesame seeds and various herbs to white and fluffy ones. In the photo, light green bread with cheese and rammarine

When you look at the shelves with bread in the store, your eyes run up and you can't choose .. In cafes and restaurants, the bread plate is also varied.

Mm, salmon!

In Finland, it is divine in any form - smoked, salted, in soup, grilled, etc. In the photo below - salmon stewed over a fire, planks with fish are placed directly on the coals in the fire, at a distance of 15-20 cm from the fire, and in this way they smoke it .. It turns out just delicious!

And this salmon steak is the most common dish in a restaurant, and surprisingly, it is simply impossible to spoil it, I always gobble it up by both cheeks :)

Meat and various game

Everything is fine with this in Finland, you can try pheasant, rabbit, wild boar, and venison with bear meat, in general, if you are a fan of meat and like to experiment, then ask for recommendations in a restaurant, with a probability of 99% there will be some specialty a certain type of meat, not fish

Let's move on to desserts!

Bread cheese

If translated literally, then this is bread cheese, but there is no smell of bread here, in fact, this is fried squeaky cheese, served warm under a creamy sauce with cinnamon and most often with cloudberry jam (this is probably the most favorite berry among the Finns), and in summer - sometimes with fresh berries

This is a very satisfying dessert, but even after dinner it is sometimes impossible to resist ..

Don't like cheese? (Seriously? Really, there are such people?) Then try other desserts!
For example, very photogenic and no less delicious cupcakes 🙂

Enjoy your weekend!
