To make sea buckthorn jam at home as useful as possible, you need to properly prepare the berry itself. Collecting it is not so easy. There are five tricks here.

  1. Collection time. The berries turn orange in the middle of summer, but do not rush to take up the basket. Sea buckthorn will acquire real ripeness by autumn. In the warmest regions, it may be August, but usually September-October.
  2. Sweetness . It is best to harvest sea buckthorn after the first light frost. Then the rather sour berries will become sweeter.
  3. Caution. When the berries are poured with juice, they are easily damaged. Therefore, you need to be as careful as possible, otherwise the healthy juice will leak out. It is necessary to take care of your hands and face - sea buckthorn bushes have sharp thorns.
  4. Twig method... With the help of a knife or nippers, cut off small branches, abundantly strewn with berries. At home, you can carefully cut the berries over a cup or trim them with scissors. Another option is to freeze the branches, then the fruits can be harvested without damaging them.
  5. Collection devices... Craftsmen have come up with various products to facilitate collection. Someone takes a regular fork, removing one prong in the middle. And through this hole passes the branches on the tree. There is another option. A wire loop of an oblong shape is attached to the stick, its top is an acute angle, like a candle flame. The loop is put on the branch. The picker tugs at the branch, the berries fall. At the bottom you need to spread fabric or polyethylene.

The berries collected in one way or another must be freed from the stalks, leaves and pieces of branches must be selected. Rinse and prepare the jam.
